About Town: The Food Cart Revolution Comes to Tumalo
OK, so it isn’t exactly CARTopia. No, one food cart does not a revolution make. But the fact that a tiny unincorporated town like Tumalo has even one food cart definitely qualifies as news. Nearby Sisters, with more than twice the population (even more, if we’re talking school district), has yet to embrace its first food cart (Bend, no surprise, has quite a few popular carts scattered around town). Shades of Autumn in Central Oregon
Each year around this time, I become a wanderer.
My quest is simple: Seek out the most vibrant fall colors I can find.
Not that it’s much of a challenge –- each autumn, Oregon is awash in the quintessential colors of fall. Continue reading
Open for Business in Sisters: Lots of New Spots to Explore
Not long ago, I wrote about our recent cross-town office move. After the dust had cleared – after I had finished unpacking and was getting situated — I began to notice quite a bit of other activity on the commercial real estate front in Sisters. In fact, the more I looked, the more new businesses I noticed around town. Continue reading
New Kid in Town: Sisters Welcomes Open Range decor store
It isn’t often a new retail outfit opens in January in Sisters (or anywhere, for that matter). But for Open Range Western & Lodge Decor store owner Denelle Martin, the timing just seemed right. She had already missed out on two opportunities to nab the prime retail location in Sisters — in the heart of downtown, on Cascade Avenue — and figured it was now or never. Even if that meant commuting back and forth from Canby until her two teenage sons finish the school year.
Much of the stock here is hand-crafted, and many pieces are one-of-a-kind items. In fact, Martin produces quite a bit of the Western-themed items herselfOpen Range store owner Denelle Martin — everything from candles and horse shoe art to barbed-wire signage and corrugated metal posters. My Day at Some Day Farm
Not long ago, I got to accompany Jack on one of his horseshoeing jobs at a new jumping barn in Tumalo. Before our visit to Some Day Farm (20361 Tumalo Rd.), I didn’t even realize the place existed — it’s set back quite a bit off the road, and the owners had yet to add any signage (they have since added a visible sign). So I didn’t know what to expect.
Well, to say I was pleasantly surprised by the impressive setup was an understatement. Owner/trainer Cat Cruger has only been in place at the new facility since November (she used to lease the barn at Little Remuda Ranch, across the street) but is already filled to capacity (45 horse boarders) at the 32-acre property.
And, judging from what Cat has done here, it’s easy to see why. This place is very well-thought-out and extremely well-maintained. How many barns do you know that were designed so that a different view of the Cascade Mountains would be visible through each of the windows in the covered arena? Nice. Especially since this place offers some superlative views of the mountains. But that’s just a side benefit. Continue reading

It’s a Cowboy Christmas in Tumalo
Folks in Tumalo have a couple of out-of-the-ordinary opportunities to get into the holiday spirit this weekend.

Christmas shoppers in search of unique Western-inspired, equestrian or home-grown gifts are encouraged to visit the participating local businesses: Riding In Style, Stellar Ranch, Farmer John’s Produce, The Ole Tack Room and Cowgirls Trading Post. Shop in style — via Horse Drawn Taxi – from 11-2 p.m. Barbecue will be served up on Cowgirls’ parking lot.
Tumalo Hosts Christmas Events — Cook Avenue & Flyspur Ranch
On Sunday from 3-5 p.m., the folks at Fly Spur Ranch (64460 Research Rd) are hosting an afternoon of Christmas Caroling on their Cowboy Carriage.
